What is Active Release Technique?

If you feel tight, restricted, or like something is “stuck” in your muscles or joints — especially during certain movements — you may be dealing with adhesions or scar tissue that restrict mobility. These restrictions can limit range of motion, pinch nerves, and lead to chronic pain or recurring injury.

Active Release Technique (ART) is a hands-on, movement-based treatment that targets these adhesions directly. At Back In Motion Physical Therapy & Performance, we use ART as part of The Gray Method™  in our Fort Myers and Cape Coral offices to quickly identify restricted tissues, break up adhesions, and restore normal, pain-free movement.

Common Causes of Soft Tissue Restrictions We See:

  • Repetitive motion or overuse from sports, work, or training
  • Poor posture leading to chronic tension
  • Scar tissue from past injuries or surgeries
  • Muscle imbalances and compensations
  • Nerve entrapment from tight fascia or surrounding tissues

How Does Active Release Technique Work?

ART works by combining precise manual pressure with patient movement to break up scar tissue and adhesions in muscles, ligaments, tendons, fascia, and nerves.

Your therapist will assess your movement, locate the exact area of restriction, and use their hands to apply tension while guiding you through specific motions. This combination allows us to release the tight tissue, restore circulation, and retrain the area to move normally.

Unlike passive treatments, ART is interactive and highly targeted — making it effective for both recent injuries and chronic, stubborn conditions.

Conditions That Benefit From Active Release Technique

We often use ART at Back In Motion Physical Therapy & Performance to treat:

  • Carpal tunnel and wrist pain

  • Repetitive strain injuries (RSI)

Whether you’re dealing with pain, poor movement, or nerve symptoms that haven’t responded to rest or stretching — ART may be the missing piece.

Why Choose Us?

Pain can be confusing, frustrating, and discouraging — especially when you’ve already tried rest, exercises, or physical therapy and nothing seems to stick. At Back In Motion Physical Therapy & Performance, we don’t just help you feel better temporarily — we help you understand why the pain is happening and what it will take to fix it.

  • We Start With the Root Cause — Not a Diagnosis Code
We don’t rely on vague labels or generic protocols. We identify why the pain started. We uncover what’s keeping it from resolving. We explain everything in clear, understandable terms.

  • We Use The Gray Method™ — Not Cookie-Cutter PT
Your body isn’t standard — your care shouldn’t be either. We evaluate how your body moves, loads, and compensates. We identify which areas are doing too much — and which aren’t doing enough. We build care that’s precise, intentional, and specific to you.
  • We Treat the Whole Body — Not Just Where It Hurts
Pain is rarely just a local problem. We assess how the feet, hips, and spine work together. We identify movement patterns that create overload or breakdown. We fix what’s driving the pain — not just where you feel it.
  • You’ll Always Know What’s Helping — and What’s Hurting
No more guessing every time you move.We explain which movements are safe right now. We clarify what should be modified temporarily — and why.We help you move forward without fear.
  • We Focus on Fixing the Cause — Not Managing Symptoms
Our goal isn’t to help you “live with it.” We address the underlying contributors to pain. We rebuild strength, confidence, and trust in your body.We avoid unnecessary medications, injections, or surgery whenever possible.
  • One-on-One Care — No Rushing, No Hand-Offs
Your care is never rushed or passed off. You work one-on-one with a skilled professional. Every session has purpose, explanation, and intention. You always know why you’re doing what you’re doing.
  • Clarity Comes Before Commitment
We begin with a Root Cause Assessment. You get answers before you make decisions. You understand your options clearly. There is no pressure to continue care.

  • Built for Active People Who Want More Than “Manage It”
Most people come to us frustrated and uncertain. They leave feeling informed, confident, and in control again. Because when your care finally makes sense — everything changes

One-on-one • Precision-based • Clarity guaranteed
